Introducing Edmund Drake by George N. Root III
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Imagine for a moment, if you will, aliens invade earth and start making a mess of things. Now imagine you grew up in Roswell, New Mexico and happened to be a famous TV magazine show host.
This is the premise of Caleb Devin Chronicles, Book 1 by George N. Root.
The book begins with Caleb Devin, whose father and grandfather were both military men in Roswell, setting the stage of how he got to interview the head honcho of the alien invaders. It talks a brief jog through Stone’s early years and his network television career, including a career-ending fiasco, all while heading towards the interview of a lifetime.
It paints just as vividly a picture of post-invasion America as it does pre-invasion Roswell. The details early on in the book beg the reader to believe that the work of fiction is truly a diary entry, as it is written in a first-person style in much the same manner. By seeing the world through Devin’s eyes, it makes it much easier to suspend disbelief on the whole matter of aliens.
The novella is a quick read and broken into 21 easily digestible chapters, concluding just as Devin is about to interview Edmund Drake.
In fact, that’s about the only issue I have with the book is that it just ends too soon. It left me wanting to immediately go to the interview with Drake. But that’s more my issue that Roots. In fact, it’s a testament to the enjoyability of the book. I was left wanting more.
