The Gate of the Feral Gods by Matt Dinniman

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book pulled me back in. Not that I was ever out, but I didn’t love the previous book with the trains. My brain just couldn’t take it all in.

Now in this book, The Gate of the Feral Gods, which is the fourth in the series and takes place on the fifth floor of the dungeon, there is ALSO a lot going on. But I was able to keep up. So it was more enjoyable.

Basically on this level, the crawlers that remain (178,000 or so), are broken up into groups and put into bubbles. There are four sectors per bubble and just over 1,000 bubbles. The crawlers must complete a task in their own sectors and all four sectors per bubble must be completed before any of them can move on to the next level.

Carl, Donut, Mongo, Mordecai, and Katia get paired up with a bunch of crawlers of … let’s politely say “lesser skill.” They also pick up a couple new friends here: A shape shifting prostitute NPC named Juice Box and the head of a sex doll that contains a god (demi-god?) named Samantha. Matt Dinniman’s penchant for the absurd knows no bounds. Truly. But in true Royal Court of Princess Donut fashion, they excel.

There are clearly things going on behind the scenes that the reader is not privy to. Carl is still trying to tear it all down. And a lot of that conversation happens “off stage,” if you will. But A LOT of that comes out at the end of the book.

And the epilogue is literally game changing. I can’t wait to start the fifth book. And I can’t stop telling my friends that they need to start reading this series because I want to talk about it! But I am afraid to discuss it on social media because I don’t want to spoil things for others … or get things spoiled myself.

I wish there was somewhere you could go to discuss things with people who are at the same place in the series as you are. Maybe there is. If so, let me know.

Now go out there and kill, kill kill! And I’ll see you back here after I finish the next one.
