Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Reading through the reviews, I was convinced that there must have been a campaign to write negative reviews. So many people complaining about foul language, the story jumping around or not being funny.
Sure, there were some F bombs. But it was hardly overwhelming. Yes, the story jumped around. That’s how stories are often told. And are you really going to complain that the tragedies that Trevor Noah lived through weren’t funny enough for you?
But I notice that overall, the book has a 4.9 rating. It’s just that (for me at least) 20 of the first 25 reviews were negative. (why is that?)
I, personally found the story compelling, entertaining, (at times) hilarious, (at times) gut wrenching and (often) educational. I honestly learned more about apartheid from this book than I previously knew.
Trevor Noah is a great storyteller. And if you aren’t looking for a G-rated stand-up routine, I’d think you’ll love it, too.
