Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I had heard of Hillbilly Elegy during JD Vance’s first senate run in 2022. Politicians write books. So I didn’t think much of it.
But once Vance was added to the 2024 ticket, I put this book on my proverbial pile. And I finally got around to reading it.
I didn’t hate it. In fact, I found it a pretty decent and easy read. My issue was that I couldn’t see how the JD Vance that I had come to know from his time in the Senate and his newfound partnership with Donald Trump could have written it.
The writer of this book was fairly eloquent. He had a sense of humor. And compassion. In the end, I was honestly just confused because it was supposed to be a story about his life. And I wanted to read it to see how he became who he is. But it really didn’t offer any help with that.
I’m not disappointed to have read it. But I remain confused.
