We Can Remember It for You Wholesale by Philip K. Dick

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Having recently watched both the 1990 and 2012 versions of “Total Recall,” I decided I should read the source work, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.” A lifelong fan of PK Dick, I was actually surprised that I hadn’t read it previously.

The version I read was part of an audio book titled “Minority Report and Other Stories,” as narrated by Keir Dullea. At just 53 minutes, it went by quickly. It was rather entertaining on its own but bore little resemblance to either of the movies I had watched — not that that was a bad thing.

The book is prototypical PK Dick. Science fiction set in the future with a whole bunch of things that didn’t really exist in 1966 — some of which do exist now, some of which do not.

If you like “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep,” you’re likely to enjoy this, as well.
