News, notes and necessities

items of interest the week of Jan. 5, 2009

an occasional update from me, Scott Leffler

News:

Monday: Mondays mean catching up on the news. On WECK, we do that with WGRZ’s Matt Pearl, who will join me at 10:30 a.m. to talk some news, some sports, and treat us to some inside baseball from the Channel 2 newsroom. Then on WLVL, Bob Confer will talk about Albany … specifically; NFTA Payrolls,  AMD’s $1B package,  A new, state-run alternative fuel lab, and Medicaid.

Tuesday: WNYMedia.net is a great web site for anyone who loves Western New York. Whether you’re into sports, politics or the arts, WNYMedia.net has a daily dose of what you need. And now, Reason has a weekly dose of WNYMedia.net as Marc Odien will be joining me every week to talk about what’s on the website.

Thursday: Paul Fallon, evil publisher of the Beast, will join me on WECK to talk about their “50 Most Loathesome People” list for 2008. Previous lists have gotten them great publicity … and sued. Although I’m not sure it was in that order. Paul’s always fun and he’ll be joining me on the first Thursday of each month throughout 2009.

Friday: I certainly hope you enjoyed Serenity Falls last Friday. WNY has a great music scene and this Friday we’re going to kick off the weekend with more live music. Band TBA.

Notes: Scholastic Bowl starts back up on WLVL this week. Tuesday to be precise. There are four matches this week. And either three or four matches most weeks from now until mid-March. All games start at 5:30 p.m. and broadcast on WLVL AM 1340.

Necessities: Facebook, people. I know a lot of you are on Facebook. And I’m friends with a whole shabang of you. But for those of you who aren’t … you should be.

I sent this to you because I thought you might appreciate it. If I was wrong, please just respond and ask to be taken off the mailing list. I’ll take care of it. If this was forwarded to you and you’d like to receive future updates, please email scott@scottleffler.com and ask to be added to the list. I’ll make that happen.

  1. I was the captain of LHS’ scholastic bowl team in ’00 and ’01. We went to the playoffs for the first time since, if my memory serves me correctly, 94 during my watch.

If only I could still get 1340 in Buffalo. It is a cool thing to put on the radio and if the kids appreciate it half as much today as I did then, it is something that they will remember for some time.

  2. FTLT,

I just created a facebook group for Scholastic Bowl in hopes of finding some SB alum from throughout the years.

The signal drops out before it hit’s B-Lo, but you can listen online … wlvl.com.

    Spread the word.
