Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

While I found The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes interesting. And enjoyed it for what it was, I didn’t love it. I cannot say the same about Sunrise on the Reaping.

It was fantastic. Probably as good as the original Hunger Games, which blew me away. I don’t know whether Suzanne Collins had Haymitch’s backstory so drawn out in her mind when writing the first book or whether she was just incredibly adept at plucking things from the original trilogy and finding ways to explain them. But it was SO well done.

Some of the fan service went a bit overboard, in my opinion. It was just too convenient at times and detracted from the story a bit but not enough to deduct any points.

Jefferson White’s narration didn’t enthrall me at first but over the course of the book, I grew to love it. He was very believable as Haymitch. And his intonation changes for other characters was great. I particularly enjoyed his Plutarch.

Now I want to go back to the original trilogy and re-read it just to see what other “trinkets” I may have missed.
